The renown poet and literary giant Langston Hughes penned a t poignant poem:
“What Happens To A Dream Deferred?”
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-
and then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over-
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
Hughes’ thought provoking poem focuses on the limitations of the American Dream in the lives of African Americans: racial bias, prejudice, economic hardships. Nevertheless, Hughes’ queries also apply to the dream, vision, goal you have for your life. Have you allowed your dream to dry up or fester like a sore?
You have had a dream that has not yet manifested: an aspiring career; a successful business; the ministry; marriage; children; advanced degree(s) . . .
Solomon declared, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21 NIV
Every dream God gives is for a divine purpose and is designed to bring HIM glory. Old Testament luminary Hannah, a barren woman, longed to give birth to a son. She yearned deeply day after day in the temple, crying out to God in prayer, and at home sharing with her husband Elkanah her desire to have a son. However, Hannah remained barren until she made a vow to give her son back to the Lord. Immediately Hannah was impregnated and gave birth to a man-child Samuel, (God has heard). At the appointed time she dedicated him to the Lord and Samuel became one of the greatest prophets and judges in the Old Testament. Later, as a result to Hannah’s faith and obedience, she gave birth to five children.
God is faithful! He will bring your dreams to manifestation. Trust HIM! Remember, you are relationship with God, The Father, who can do what appears to be impossible.
Stop living your life dreaming the dream; live the dream!
